Dedicated
servers
What
does it mean to have a dedicated server?
This is a machine that Kiosk makes available solely for
your use. This is not shared with any other customer and
you have full use of the server's resources. Shared servers
often have between 100 and 500 customers on them depending
upon their purpose.
You
are only responsible for the monthly fee and setup fees.
Kiosk is responsible for purchasing the equipment and
all hardware repairs on the server. For example, if a
harddrive dies one night at 3am, it is our engineers responsibility
to repair the harddrive at our cost.
What
is the difference between a colocated and a dedicated
server?
Kiosk owns the server when it is a dedicated server and
the customer owns the server when it is a colocated server.
Unlike a dedicated server, Kiosk is not responsible for
repairing hardware on a colocated server. Our engineers
are available to help troubleshoot and repair colocated
servers at a rate of $60 per hour.
When
do I know if I need a dedicated server?
This is a difficult question to answer, but any Webmaster
of a Web site that experiences rapidly increasing traffic
levels must ask themselves this question, especially if
a large part of their Web site is dynamically generated.
Kiosk's policy is that at a certain point, in terms of
traffic and/or database load, we will ask you to move
to a dedicated server or find another hosting company
willing to place you on a shared server. The reason for
this is that every client on a shared server is using
some of the resources of that particular server and a
resource intensive Web site will consume too many of these
shared resources (disk throughput, memory usage, etc.)
thus destroying performance not only for that Web site
but also for all other clients on the same server.
Will
Kiosk handle the administration for my server?
We can provide as much administration as the customer
requires. Please note that this will be charged out at
$75 per hour. Cheaper blocks of time can also be purchased
on a pre-paid basis.
Root
access
Both full root and restricted root access is offered on
our dedicated servers. Please contact a Sales Representative
to find out which is best for your implementation.
Remotely
connect to your server to do work
We recommend using secure telnet for Unix servers. If
you have a cluster of servers and wish to install a firewall
and/or VPN environment, please contact us to set that
up.
Server
monitoring
As part of our dedicated service, Kiosk will provide you
with URL /Keyword monitoring and work closely with you
to make sure essential services are fully monitored. We
can also set up our monitoring to contact you directly
if there is ever a failure.
