Frequently
asked questions
How
can I tell if the domain name I want is available?
Go to www.kiosk.ws
If the domain name you're interested in is already registered
to someone else, the returned page will indicate contact
names, addresses and E-mail info. If no match is found,
it is very likely that your name is still available.
How
much does it cost to register my own domain name?
To register your domain name with Directnic it costs
$15 for 1 year, then $15 per year to renew. We can offer
you a reduced price. See our Hosting
page for our current offer.
If
I set up my site using your instant setup, how long does
it take for my site to be viewed by everyone on the Internet?
Sign up online, and your account will be set up within
60 minutes. Our system will E-mail you your user name and
password, and you can access your control panel and begin
FTP'ing to your server right away. It will take 12-72 hours
for your domain name to propagate (see next question).
What
is "propagate"?
When you register your domain name, you tell InterNIC
which domain name servers (DNS) to use to serve your site
to the web. The DNS entries have to propagate - Internet
Service Providers (ISPs) around the world have to update
their records. This can take 12-72 hours (it typically takes
a day). Since some ISPs update their DNS tables more frequently
than others, your site will be visible from some ISPs earlier
than others. This process is the same no matter which host
you choose. At Harris Media, you can use your unique IP
address to work on and view your site while your domain
name propagates.
How
do I upload files to your server? When can I do this?
Once your account is set up, you can transfer files
to the server whenever you like. After you've signed up,
we will E-mail you a user ID and password that will enable
you to access our server. In most cases, the easiest way
to upload files to the server is to use an FTP
program. A good one will enable you to drag and drop all
your web site files from your computer to ours. DaveCentral
has screenshots and descriptions of a number of FTP programs
you can download and use; some are freeware. We use Coffeecup
free FTP, which is easy to use and excellent. Other options?
If you're using Microsoft FrontPage, you'll want to use
its publish tool. Finally, our Control Panel also contains
a File Manager that will allow you to upload files without
FTP.
I
already have a web site hosted with another company? How
can I move my site to your server without experiencing downtime?
If you are transferring an existing domain, use overlap
to make the transition completely seamless. Open your account
with us. Set up your site on our server. When everything
is working the way you want it to, THEN put through your
domain transfer request with your registrar. Don't cancel
your old account until at least three days after this. (While
three days will be enough time for most ISPs to update their
DNS tables, some will lag behind. Therefore, if possible,
leave your site up in both locations for a few weeks.) Please
feel free to call us at 1-819-682-3744 if you need additional
help.
How
will I know how many visitors have come to my site?
Your account comes with detailed statistics, which you
can access through your Control Panel. You will not have
access to your control panel until your domain propagates!!!
You'll have complete access to these figures at all times.
These in-depth statistics give you an excellent idea of
how many people visited your site, how they found you, and
what they were most interested in. You will also have access
to your log files, so you can run them through your favorite
statistics software as well.
I
want to add a hit counter to my home page. Can I?
Counters used to be very popular, but they are rarely
seen on professional sites these days. They are easily manipulated
and not that informative. However, if you must, you can
easily add a counter to your site through a utility in your
Control Panel.
Do
you put banners or pop-up window ads on my site?
No. Banners and pop-ups are associated with free hosting
services. Kiosk offers professional quality hosting, and
we do not put banners, pop-up windows, or ads of any kind
on your site.
What
if I want to put a "Hosted by Kiosk" banner on
my site?
You're welcome to do so and we appreciate it, but it
is not required. If you decide to do so we strongly recommend
that you join our affiliate program first. That way
if the banner that you place on your site creates a new
contract for us we will give you 25% of it.You can find
our banners inside the members area once you become an affiliate.

Can
I get to my site without the "www" at the beginning
of the URL?

What
is E-mail forwarding?

to your regular E-mail address. You can set up your account
to forward E-mail to any POP3 E-mail accounts you specify.

I need an autoresponder?

send a preset E-mail response to someone sending you E-mail

to prospects, to answer routine questions, or to let people
know when you're on vacation. Autoresponders are included

How do I use an FTP client.
What does FTP stand for anyway?
FTP
stands for file transfer protocol. We recommend Coffeecup
FTP for uploading and downloading your files to your web
server.
FTP
Using CoffeeCup Free FTP (Windows)
Download CoffeeCup

- Uploading
and Downloading
- Click
on the "Servers" menu and select one of
the sites you have set up.
- This
connects you to the district web server.
- On
the left side of the window are the contents of your
local computer ("Local Starting Directory"
in the setup illustration above).
- On
the right side of the window are the contents of your
assigned directory on your district's web server.
- NOTE:
When creating web documents in some word processors
(e.g. Word), it's necessary to close the file (File
Menu > Close) or you might get an error message
"Unable to open local file..." when
attempting to upload file.
- Dragging
something from the local computer side to the web
server side copies the item onto the web server. Once
there, the file is accessible from the Internet
with a web browser (Internet Explorer 5.5x has proven
consistently robust)
- Be
sure to keep earlier generations of your work backed
up on the hard drive of your own computer.
.What
are affiliate programs?
Affiliate
programs are also known as associate programs, referral
programs revenue sharing programs or commission programs.
The basic idea behind such programs is that you provide
a link with your unique id to a web retailer on your website
and when your visitors click on the link and buys a product
or service from the web retailer, you are rewarded with
commission based on how much the visitor spent. If you are
a merchant with a product to sell, it involves either buying
or leasing affiliate software from a solution provider,
and then finding people that are interested about selling
your product. We have one of the best affiliate programs
on the web. We pay astonishing life time commissions.
For more information on our affiliate program please visit
our affiliate
page.
What different types of affiliate
programs are there?
There
are many types of affiliate programs but almost all of them
can be classified into 4 main categories:
Pay
per sale: This is by far the most common and direct
type. When a visitor clicks on the link to the web retailer
from your website and proceeds to make a purchase on a service
or product, you are given a commission. Commission for such
programs are usually in percentages of your visitors' spendings,
meaning that the more money your visitors spend, the more
you are paid. Commission usually range from 1% to 25%, but
several programs may go higher.
Pay
per lead: For this type of programs, you are paid when
your visitors request information for a product or sign
up for free offers. Note that your visitors do not have
to purchase anything for you to earn revenue. Most of the
time, all they have to do is to fill in a form giving some
of their particulars. Therefore, the conversion rate is
usually much higher than that of pay per sale programs although
the pay out is not as high. You usually earn $0.50 to $20.00
per lead depending on what type of programs you are joining.
Pay
per click: As the name implies, you are given commission
whenever a visitor to your website clicks on a web retailer's
banner or link and is transported to their website. Pay
outs are usually between $0.01 to $0.15 per click.
Pay
per (thousand) impression: These final type of affiliate
programs do not need your visitors to do anything at all.
All you have to do is to place the web retailer's banner
on your website and you are paid according how many times
their banner loads. Banner impressions are usually calculated
per thousand and commissions usually range from $1 to $2
per one thousand impression. This type of affiliate programs
are ideal for high traffic sites with very large numbers
of pageviews.
What
does it mean when you say an affiliate program is 2-tier
or multi tier?
When
I say that an affiliate program is 2-tier, it means that
every time you manage to persuade another webmaster to take
part in that program, you will be able to earn a percentage
of that webmaster's earnings. It is said that you have referred
the webmaster to that program. 2-tier programs therefore
present an opportunity for you to earn more revenue, and
that is the reason they tend to be more highly rated in
the directory. Our program is multi tiered with the
highest rate of commission pay out
How
do I link to affiliate programs?
You
will usually be given banners or text links to place on
your website. The important thing is to remember to place
your referral code within the links. In our program you will
get your very own unique web address. It will be www.kiosk.ws/members/(yourname).
Are
there any costs to join affiliate programs?
Most
affiliate programs are free but a minority may require you
to pay a one-time setup fee or monthly. Always read the
member agreement carefully to see if the program is free
to join. Our program is NOT free to join.
Do
I have to own a website to join affiliate programs?
Some
affiliate programs require you to have one but most programs
also allow editors of e-mail newsletters to join. Since
we give you your very own web address all you need is an
internet connection to join www.kiosk.ws.
How
much can I make from affiliate programs?
It
depends on a few factors really: The amount of traffic your
website attracts, how targeted are the traffic and how well-designed
your website is. For a well-designed website our top affiliates
attract about 500 unique visitors everyday, allowing them
to reap profits in excess of $1500 a month. Some estimates
put the number of daily visitors at 1500, but all this is
really quite a subjective matter.
Do
you have any long term contracts? How do we pay for our
Web hosting?
Yes,
we offer a yearly package which is equal to $14.95 per month
instead of $18.95. You can also pay month to month as you
go. All Web site hosting is billed on the day that you joined
every month.
